Naomi Keep, who recently gave birth to twins, talks about her awareness of the potential of cord blood and why she decided to store her twins’ umbilical stem cells with Biovault.
1. When did you first hear about cord blood banking?
I became aware of it after a scan that indicated there could be potential problems. Naturally, I was concerned, and researched things in detail – that is when I found out about the possibilities of cord blood banking.
2. What did your husband think about cord blood banking?
He thought it was a really sensible option when we started looking into it. He saw it as an insurance policy.
3. What were the main factors in your decision?
There was potential for one or both of the twins to have eyesight problems. Our research led us to some intelligence in the United States that indicated that banking cord blood could be beneficial just in case it was needed to treat such a problem.
4. Why did you ultimately decide to bank cord blood?
It was really that insurance policy type thinking. The twins have no brothers or sisters plus my husband and I are older parents. It was a unique chance to bank against potential problems in the future.
5. Was it a difficult decision? Were there any negatives?
As I said, we researched the process in a great deal of detail. We recognised that it is not always possible to collect enough blood and indeed that the process is quite costly but on balance it wasn’t a difficult decision to seize the opportunity.
6. Why choose Biovault Family?
They are based opposite Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and have close ties with the NHS. This gave us confidence and showed their credibility. I was very pleased with that choice as they made the process really easy and everybody I dealt with at Biovault Family was very helpful at what was a stressful time. All in all, we are reassured that we have done everything we can to protect our family.
