An important breakthrough using umbilical cord blood stem cells to grow artificial skin has been published in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine.

Major-burns victims currently have to be treated over a number of weeks during which skin is grown from parts of the patients healthy skin.

With this new technology of creating skin using stem cells, which can be stored in a tissue bank, means that the treatment can be brought forward by many weeks.
